Architecture & Design

Inspired by Paul Revere Williams’ architectural designs, create blueprints and sketch a dream home of the future.

Classify iconic Las Vegas buildings as either “duck” or “shed” architecture and defend your opinion in writing.

Invent a fictional business and design a Googie-inspired sign for it. Consider target audience, pricing, color schemes, font styles, etc.

Discover architectural styles from around the world and how they have been brought to Las Vegas as “repli-tecture”. Work in teams to construct a paper building model in one of these styles.

Learning Outcomes
Activities
Standards
• Students will gain knowledge of different architectural styles from around the world. • Inspired by Paul Revere Williams’ architectural designs, create blueprints and sketch a dream home of the future. • VA:Cr1.6.1 Combine concepts collaboratively to generate innovative ideas for creating art.
• Students will learn to work in teams while comparing/contrasting design elements. • Classify iconic Las Vegas buildings as either “duck” or “shed” architecture and defend your opinion in writing. • VA:Cr2.6.3 – Design or redesign objects, places, or systems that meet the identified needs of diverse users.
• Students will analyze architectural blueprints from Paul Revere Williams. • Invent a fictional business and design a Googie-inspired sign for it. Consider target audience, pricing, color schemes, font styles, etc. • VA:Cn11.6.1 – Analyze how art reflects changing times, traditions, resources, and cultural uses.
• Students will design and sketch their own blueprints using real-world mathematical problems. • Discover architectural styles from around the world and how they have been brought to Las Vegas as “repli-tecture”. Work in teams to construct a paper building model in one of these styles. • VA:Cn11.7.1 – Analyze how response to art is influenced by understanding the time and place in which it was created, the available resources, and cultural uses.
• Students will analyze how art changes over time and create a fictional business. • VA:Cr1.8.2 – Collaboratively shape an artistic investigation of an aspect of present day life using a contemporary practice of art and design.
• Students will discover new architectural terms and analyze what buildings are ducks vs sheds. • ELA.W.(6-8).1 – Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
• Students will write arguments defending their position on the architectural topic • ELA.SL.(6-8).2 – Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.
• 6.NS.B – Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
• 6.G.A.1 – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
• 7.G.B.6 -Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.
